As the Communications Coordinator for the Volunteer Actions Center's program Dream B.I.G., my responsibilities encompass designing promotional materials, merchandise, writing the weekly newsletters, and designing the Dream B.I.G. yearbook for our mentees' graduation from the program. Dream B.I.G. (Believing in Girls) operates as an afterschool mentorship program in collaboration with J.O. Kelly Middle School, where college girls are paired with middle school girls for lessons and activities.
Being around our mentees has provided valuable insights into their preferences. I created the design of this hoodie to resonate with them, incorporating vibrant colors, simple illustrations, and a hand-drawn appearance. To maintain a playful aesthetic, I used a script typeface and added a border around the objects to mimic a marker. My objective was to create a hoodie that I would have loved to wear in middle school so they would want to wear it too.
I began by sketching various objects such as fruit, hearts, stars, butterflies, and other elements that align with the interests of our mentees. Experimenting with composition, I worked to find a balance with the arrangement of objects and determine how many could fit inside the drawn frame.
